Preparing Principals to Lead in Today's Varied Educational Settings

Abstract


This articles examines three different cohort-based school leader preparation models developed and implemented with suburban, rural, and urban schools. The University of Central Missouri's Collaborative Principals Preparation Program (CPPP) created a  partnership with 14 suburban school districts to prepare future school leaders. UCM subsequently designed programs for rural and urban leader.  Each program includes job-embedded learning throughout the six semesters of the program, including a two-semester internship component in which students work with mentors within their district.  Cohort specific accommodations help support aspiring school leaders preparing to work in suburban, rural, or urban school settings, each characterized by its own unique sources of issues, challenges, and needs.
