Today’s Technology: Using Snapchat to Connect Educators, Learners, and Content

Abstract


Modern educators are not just expected to teach academic content; they are expected to integrate culture, creativity, and problem-solving as they prepare the students for a global world that relies increasingly on technology to create and maintain connections among learners and content. While computer-assisted learning on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Blogger has gained much attention in recent literature, less research has been done to emphasize another educational tool: Snapchat. This oft-overlooked video, text, and imaging platform offers administrators, educators, and learners a myriad of ways to connect with each other, the content, and the broader community (Ernstberger & Venable, 2016; Ram, 2015). Although originally used for entertainment, the app's popularity with American youth has prompted many educators to use Snapchat to supplement and augment their lessons in create and innovative ways. This article explores advantages and disadvantes of using Snapchat in an educational setting as well as practical tips for setting up and utilizing an account to forge connections among educators, students, and target content.
