Author Guidelines

Research Articles Criteria:

A research manuscript presents original, empirical research that can be quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods.

Manuscripts submitted for Research Articles must adhere to the following requirements: 1) describe research significant for rural education; 2) be based on current, appropriate literature; 3) methodology and analytical techniques need to be appropriate and accurate, and 4) discussion is applicable to rural settings.  As with all submissions, clarity of writing (syntax, style, mechanics, organization) and overall level of scholarship will be considered.  Typical manuscripts are 20-25 pages.

Review Criteria:

1) Reviewed literature is current, sufficient

2) Methodology and analytic techniques are appropriate and accurate

3) Thorough discussion of findings, limitations, and conclusions

4) Research is significant for rural education

5) Writing is clear (syntax, style, mechanics, and organization)

Promising Practices Criteria:

A promising practices manuscript describes and highlights effective and emerging practices by and for educators in rural settings.

Manuscripts submitted for Promising Practices must adhere to the following requirements: 1) describe a practice significant to rural education;  2) be based on current, appropriate literature; and 3) provide a thorough discussion of the practice with clear examples of its application.  As with all submissions, clarity of writing (syntax, style, mechanics, organization) and overall level of scholarship will be considered. Typical submissions are 15-20 pages.

Review Criteria:

1) Utilizes appropriate and current theoretical grounding

2) Description of practice is aptly described with relevant examples so that the reader understands the practice

3) Thorough discussion of implications and conclusions

4) The promising practice is significant for rural education

5) Writing is clear (syntax, style, mechanics, and organization)

General Manuscript Criteria:

  1. Submit in MS Word (.doc or .docx)
  2. 12 point font (Times New Roman preferred)
  3. Use American Psychological Association (APA) 6th Edition for style, citation, and reference guidelines
  4. Tables and figures should be embedded in the text.
  5. Include an abstract, not to exceed 150 words
  6. Attach an identification cover sheet containing the following information about the author(s): name and official title, institutional affiliation, address, zip code, telephone, fax, and e-mail address and include keywords (for use in searching)
  7. Indicate which author is the contact author; if not otherwise designated the first author will be considered the contact author
  8. Do not include the author(s)' name(s) on the manuscript
  9. The lead or contact author will be notified of the final decision regarding publication; progress reports during the review process are not provided.
  10. The lead or contact author will be notified of editorial changes made to the manuscript; however, the Editors reserve the right to make such changes without author’s approval or notification if time does not permit.

 


 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx)
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
