Registration and login are required to submit items online and to check the status of current submissions.

 

Author Guidelines

The Rural Educator publishes three types of articles.

Research Articles present original, empirical research that can be quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods.

Promising Practices describe practices that show promise to support teaching and learning in rural education settings.

Reviews of Research summarize the research literature in specific topics within the ten research priorities of the National Rural Education Association Research Agenda.

Specific criteria for each type of manuscript can be found here.

To submit the manuscript, create a user account (if needed) and log in to the journal website.  Then, select Author under the User Home page.

General Manuscript Criteria:

  1. Submit in MS Word (.doc or .docx)
  2. 12 point font (Times New Roman preferred)
  3. Use American Psychological Association (APA) 6th Edition for style, citation, and reference guidelines
  4. Tables and figures should be embedded in the text.
  5. Footnotes are discouraged.
  6. Include an abstract, not to exceed 150 words
  7. Attach an identification cover sheet containing the following information about the author(s): name and official title, institutional affiliation, address, zip code, telephone, fax, and e-mail address and include keywords (for use in searching)
  8. Do not include the author(s)' name(s) on the manuscript
  9. The submitting author will be notified of the final decision regarding publication; progress reports during the review process are not provided.
  10. The submitting author will be notified of editorial changes made to the manuscript; however, the Editors reserve the right to make such changes without author’s approval or notification if time does not permit.

 


 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx)
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. The instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
